Tianjin Haihe Riverfront Lighting & Sculpture Project

Harmonizing heritage and modernity through intelligent lighting and cultural artistry

 Balancing Heritage with Tomorrow’s Pulse

The Haihe Riverfront, a historic and cultural artery of Tianjin, faced multifaceted challenges in its 2003 revitalization:

– Balancing History and Modernity: Preserving the area’s nostalgic charm while infusing contemporary vibrancy for a rapidly urbanizing city.

– Public Engagement: Creating inclusive, safe, and visually engaging spaces for residents and tourists along 19 km of riverfront.

– Technical Coordination: Ensuring seamless collaboration between lighting designers, architects, and engineers to execute a visionary masterplan by French lighting maestro Louis Clair.

– Sustainability: Minimizing light pollution and energy consumption in an ecologically sensitive waterfront zone.

The city sought a transformative solution that would honor its heritage, foster community connection, and position Haihe as a global cultural destination.

Illuminating Culture Through Light and Collaboration

OLP Lighting Solutions delivered an integrated lighting and public art system, blending cutting-edge technology with cultural storytelling:

– Master Lighting Plan:

  – Customizable LED fixtures with warm-to-cool color temperatures (2700K–5000K) dynamically adapted to historical zones and modern plazas, preserving “nostalgic ambiance” while energizing nightlife.

  – Anti-glare optics and downward-directed lighting reduced skyglow, complying with dark sky preservation standards.

– Cultural Landmark – Bronze “Fu Column” Sculptures:

  – Two 23-meter-tall copper sculptures, designed by OLP, fused traditional Chinese motifs (calligraphy,镂空雕刻) with modular lighting.

  – Integrated LEDs cast warm, diffused light at night, transforming the columns into luminous beacons symbolizing prosperity (“福”) for Tianjin.

– Collaborative Workflow:

  – Cross-disciplinary teams (lighting designers, sculptors, engineers) co-developed solutions, ensuring alignment with Louis Clair’s original vision.

Legacy Cast in Light and Community Pride

– Cultural Revival: The Fu Columns became iconic landmarks, featured in 80+ tourism promotions and boosting nighttime footfall by 40%.

– Operational Efficiency: Centralized control reduced maintenance costs by 25% and extended fixture lifespan by 15 years.

– Awards & Recognition: 2006 “Excellence on the Waterfront” Award (USA), cementing Tianjin’s reputation in urban revitalization.

– Community Impact: 90% of residents reported enhanced pride in the city’s cultural identity post-project.

“A Symphony of Light That Breathes Tianjin’s Soul”

“OLP’s fusion of light and art redefined the Haihe Riverfront. Their ability to translate Louis Clair’s vision into reality—while embedding local culture—was extraordinary. The Fu Columns are not just sculptures; they’re a symbol of Tianjin’s soul.”

 Where History Fuels Progress

– Cultural Preservation: The project bridged past and present, making heritage accessible to younger generations through interactive lighting displays.

– Economic Growth: Nighttime tourism revenue increased by 35%, supporting local businesses and creating 200+ jobs.

– Environmental Stewardship: Dark-sky-compliant lighting protected local ecosystems, setting a benchmark for China’s urban waterfronts.

– Global Inspiration: Featured in UNESCO’s “Creative Cities” report, inspiring similar projects in Seoul and Rotterdam.
